There is no denying the first impression. A long-coat German Shepherd can look magnificent: a fuller outline, feathering around the legs and tail, and the unmistakable expression of the breed framed by a richer coat.
The coat is not the character
For us, the important point is that long coat is a coat variety, not a shortcut to a different temperament. The Royal Kennel Club breed standard recognises two coat varieties and describes the German Shepherd as a versatile working dog that should be balanced, attentive, resilient, loyal, self-assured, courageous and tractable.
That is the combination we love. A good German Shepherd notices everything, learns quickly and tends to form a strong relationship with the people around it. Those qualities matter much more than coat length.
Beautiful, but still a working breed
A long coat should never turn the German Shepherd into a purely decorative dog. Sound movement, useful structure, confidence and the ability to cope with everyday life are more important than an exaggerated outline or an impressive photograph.
What makes them special to us
We enjoy the contrast: a dog that can look powerful and serious one moment, then be playful, affectionate and surprisingly sensitive with its family the next. They are dogs that invite involvement. Training, walking, learning and simply living together all become part of the relationship.
That is why TopGSD is not built around the idea of producing the “fluffiest” dog. We are interested in the complete German Shepherd — with a long coat as one beautiful part of the whole.
