Ask about the parents
What are they like to live with? What health screening has been completed? Why was this particular pairing chosen? Can you see the relevant certificates or recorded results?
Meet the mother and see the environment
The Royal Kennel Club advises puppy buyers to see the puppies interacting with their mother and siblings and to see where the dogs are kept. Puppies should appear happy, healthy and inquisitive, and the breeder should be willing to show the conditions in which they are being raised.
Do not be rushed
The Royal Kennel Club also advises that a puppy should not be sold before eight weeks of age and warns buyers against pressure to make a quick decision.
Expect questions in return
A thoughtful breeder is also choosing homes. Questions about working hours, previous dogs, children, other pets, training plans and lifestyle are not an interrogation; they help match expectations and reduce avoidable problems later.
The best first conversation is usually two-way. You are deciding whether the breeder feels right for you, and the breeder is deciding whether the home feels right for the puppy.
